A big slight on David Moyes on his appointment as Manchester United manager, and indeed for few years now, is that he hasn't won anything. Manuel Pellegrini is tipped for the role in the blue half of the city, but a cloud over him is he's never won anything as a manager in European football.
But then that got me to thinking, how many managers that we know will be in their jobs come kick off for the 2013-14 season have actually won something? And how many of our trophy winning managers are actually working in the Premier League still?
The answer to my first question is FOUR. Only two have won major titles in this country too, with these TWO being the answer to my second question.
Of the 16 managers we know will be in charge in the Premier League next year, only four have won trophies in their career. A few others have won promotions, but that's about it.
Of the 30 leagues and cups won in England in the last decade, only Arsene Wenger who seems immovable at Arsenal and Michael Laudrup in his first year at Swansea are still working in the Premier League. One and a half (not sure exactly what Dalglish's situation is) have retired, two are out in Eastern Europe and two guided their clubs down to the Championship this year. There are two at top European clubs who've been adding to their honours lists whilst they've been away, though it isn't clear if they will still be where they are come next season. But, there are five currently out of work managers that have won trophies in the last ten years.
We live in a footballing landscape apparently obsessed with getting results right now, so why are there so few winners in the richest league in the football world? This is a questions I can't answer, but if you can, let me know.

*Now, all of this is written with the caveat that the conclusions are sure to change once the expected return of Jose Mourinho to Chelsea is confirmed, but for now he isn't there so it doesn't count! We also don't know who will be at Everton or Manchester City, and are unsure over who will be the 20th team in the division (though the managers of Watford and Crystal Palace have no major honours to their name).
